WHERELESSNESS

Wherelessness is a painting about identity and location grounded everywhere. It is being at home, rooted, belonging and connected to all places on earth at once. It is the pull on the heart of so many locations driving a need and ease of migration. It is releasing identity from a fixed location and specificity. Wherelessness originates in efforts to figure out what happened along the Indian Ocean trade routes that brought my ancestors together in migration. Utilizing phosphorescent paints that hold onto UV light, Wherelessness glows once the lights go out at night, emitting what we know of what makes us connected to everywhere. Fading to the darkness of what we do not know, it invites an exploration of wherelessness in sleep. What pulls you out of your place and makes you feel connected to everywhere?

Wherelessness was exhibited in The Last Frame of the Day as part of Ctrl+P Biennale of Contemporary Art in December 2024.
